EDUCATION MISSION STATEMENT

The Palms Springs Writers Guild education mission is to inspire and nurture Coachella Valley student writers, with a focus on English Language Learners. We believe in giving voice to students’ aspirations by offering a variety of writing workshops, contests, and scholarships.

Following is a snapshot of recent statistics for student writing skills in the state of California and in two Coachella Valley high schools.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACQUISITION (ELA) IN THE COACHELLA VALLEY, CA

The California State average for ELA proficiency is 50.87%.
At Rancho Mirage HS, 12.4 % are English Language Learners.
- The percentage of students attaining ELA proficiency in 2019 was 42%.
At Coachella Valley HS, 54% of the student population are English Language Learners.
- The percentage of students attaining ELA proficiency in 2019 was 28.85%.
These are concerning statistics which we would like to see improved.

High School Writing Contests:

2021-2022 Rancho Mirage High School and Indio High School

2020-2021 Indio High School

2019-2020 Coachella Valley High School

2017-2019 Rancho Mirage High School
