The Twists and Turns of the Publishing Industry

About Dak Kopec: A literary force of nature — part architect of the mind, part maestro of human drama, Dak Kopec is a prize-winning author and internationally renowned architectural psychologist. Dak doesn’t just tell stories — he engineers them. With a pen sharpened by insight and a pulse tuned to justice, he crafts bold, emotionally charged narratives that tear down façades and expose the truth within. His mission? To stir hearts, challenge norms, and architect a more humane world — one story at a time.

Description: Popular directives tell us to write query letters, secure an agent, and publish with a big publishing house. While this path may be suitable for some, it may not be the best fit for others.

In this presentation, Dak will share candid “war stories” from the perspective of an introverted writer—someone who often jokes that it takes a court order and a judge to get him out of the house. Drawing on nearly 20 years in publishing, he will walk through the major decision points in his writing career, from securing an agent to choosing a publishing house, unpacking the reasoning behind each choice.

Dak will highlight the publishing process step by step, weighing the pros and cons as he weaves in both his successes and the roadblocks he encountered along the way. He will reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and where he still needs to invest more time and energy. By sharing both the triumphs and the missteps, Dak hopes to offer fellow writers practical insight and encouragement as they chart their own publishing journeys.

Five Key Points to Take Away

    • Understand the differences in acquisitions and book selection for signing.
    • Analyze the pros and cons of Agents and Publishing Houses.
    • Discuss the unique concerns faced by introverts when deciding to publish.
    • Identify areas you need to improve to achieve your publishing goals.
    • Learn how to locate editors who will give you what you need.

In-person monthly gathering. Come experience our new panel discussions and member-to-member knowledge sharing!

Caring for the body that writes the books

        Description:
This panel explores realistic movement habits, desk setups, and mindset shifts that help writers counteract long hours in the chair—without requiring a personality transplant into a gym rat. Panelists will share the simple routines, boundaries, and hacks that keep their backs, hips, and brains functioning well enough to finish the next draft (and the one after that).

Panelists: Andy Cohen and David Parrish. Moderator: Eduardo Santiago

This event is free for all members. Registration not necessary.

The Palm Springs Writers’ Guild invites you to Retreat to the Heat

Whether you're a seasoned writer or just starting your journey, our annual retreat is designed to help you unlock your full potential in the serene desert oasis of Palm Springs, California. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Sonoran Desert, our retreat offers the perfect balance of instruction, inspiration, and relaxation.

Escape the crowds and immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of Palm Springs during the summer – the ideal time to recharge and focus on your craft. Over three enriching mornings, you'll gain invaluable insights from acclaimed writers, learning tools and techniques to help you achieve your writing goals. In the afternoons, put these strategies to work in your own writing as you receive personalized guidance and support.

Evenings are for connecting with fellow writers, whether over a delicious meal at one of Palm Springs' many renowned restaurants just steps away, or by unwinding at the pool under the vast desert sky. Let the warm breeze and star-filled nights spark your creativity, or simply relax and recharge.

Come for the writing. Stay for the inspiration.

The $1100 Retreat to the Heat registration fee includes a luxurious three-night stay at the stylish Hotel Zoso in the vibrant heart of downtown Palm Springs, daily breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks to keep you energized throughout your stay, all expert workshops, feedback, and presentations, and more.

Immerse yourself in inspiring workshops led by three acclaimed PSWG fiction authors and gain invaluable insights from a farewell keynote by husbands NY Times best-selling author Steven Rowley and Emmy Award-winning journalist and novelist Byron Lane. Learn the essential do’s and don’ts to help you navigate your writing journey with confidence.
