HIGH SCHOOL WRITING CONTESTS
For information, please contact Judalon Manes, Director of Education.

Our next event? Poetry Slam at Indio High School's Black Box Theatre, April 28 at 5:30 PM.  Our very own Cynthia West will be judging student entries based on the theme "Poetry is the Message." Don't miss this opportunity to support our Valley student writers in action!

At last year's Poetry Slam, The Guild awarded prizes to these five student  writers because of generous donations from members like you.

2020-2021 Indio High School
2019-2020 Coachella Valley High School
2017-2019 Rancho Mirage High School

WHAT'S AHEAD IN 2023-24

Want to help The Guild fulfill a wish list from teachers and students across the Coachella Valley for Screenplay, Short Story, Essay, and Poetry writing contests? With your donations, we can provide  opportunities for many more aspiring student writers.

EDUCATION MISSION STATEMENT

The Palms Springs Writers Guild education mission is to inspire and nurture Coachella Valley writers, including student writers, with a focus on English Language Learners. We believe in giving voice to students’ aspirations by offering a variety of writing workshops, contests, and scholarships.

WHY WRITING SKILLS MATTER

For the last two decades, there has been a steady decline in basic writing skills throughout the United States. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, three-quarters of both 12th and 8th graders lack proficiency in writing.

Additionally, the National Center for Education Statistics indicates that poor writing skills influence both employers and their prospective employees. Strong writing skills are a requirement for people who aspire to a career in writing and also to careers as wide-ranging as education, engineering, IT, healthcare, the arts, politics, and business. The Guild's outreach through contests can motivate our local students to develop an interest in writing.
